Sandra Mwarania

Advocacy & Programs Manager

Sandra Mwarania is a development practitioner, policy advocate and fearless campaigner for youth and women’s health and rights. She has been instrumental in influencing progressive public policies, strategies and campaigns, including contributing to thought leadership on effective youth engagement and gender diversity mainstreaming. Sandra’s combined 12+ years’ experience in anthropology, human rights, health and development issues, and strategic advocacy campaigning continues to inform her engagement with the community to elevate voice and agency of young people, women and marginalized communities towards enjoying their economic, social and cultural rights, including increased access to quality, equitable and dignified public services.

Prior to joining White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, Sandra was a senior campaigner with Amnesty International in Kenya where she successfully coordinated a maternal health campaign aimed at enhancing public awareness and agency for maternal health rights, and strengthening accountability mechanisms to address maternal health rights violations. She has also held various leadership and influencing positions, including being a member of Amnesty International’s Global Youth Collective, and Global Gender and Diversity Task Force, British Council’s Next Generation Kenya Task Force, and currently White Ribbon Alliance’s Global Strategy Working Group.

Sandra focused on the study of power relations and citizen voice while getting her Masters in Participation, Power and Social Change at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex (2014-2016). During her studies in Anthropology at the University of Nairobi (2009-2013), she took keen interest in development anthropology, particularly in the integration of local knowledge into the development agenda. The insights from these studies have reinforced her advocacy work around social change processes locally, nationally and globally.
